Background of the Study
Public awareness of foodborne illnesses is a critical factor in preventing disease outbreaks and promoting food safety. In Bauchi State, the general population’s knowledge about the causes, symptoms, and prevention of foodborne illnesses is influenced by education, media exposure, and government initiatives. Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, many residents remain inadequately informed about the risks associated with unsafe food practices (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).

The diverse socio-cultural and economic landscape of Bauchi State means that information dissemination often faces challenges such as language barriers, limited access to modern communication channels, and varying levels of literacy. Consequently, misconceptions and low levels of awareness can lead to practices that increase the risk of food contamination. Public awareness is crucial not only for individual behavioral change but also for fostering community-wide engagement in food safety practices. Studies have shown that higher levels of awareness are associated with better food handling practices at home and in public eateries (Chukwu, 2024).

This study intends to appraise the current level of public awareness regarding foodborne illnesses in Bauchi State. It will evaluate the effectiveness of existing public health campaigns, assess the channels through which information is disseminated, and determine the impact of cultural factors on knowledge retention. By integrating survey data with focus group discussions, the research will provide a nuanced understanding of the community’s awareness levels and identify critical gaps that need to be addressed. Ultimately, the findings will contribute to the design of more effective communication strategies tailored to the unique context of Bauchi State (Ogunleye, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
In Bauchi State, despite several public health campaigns aimed at raising awareness of foodborne illnesses, there remains a significant gap in the population’s understanding of these diseases. Many community members continue to lack adequate knowledge regarding the sources of contamination, symptoms of foodborne illnesses, and appropriate preventive measures. This deficiency in awareness often results in unsafe food practices at the household level and contributes to a higher incidence of foodborne diseases (Lawal, 2024).

The challenges are compounded by factors such as low literacy levels, limited access to reliable information sources, and cultural beliefs that may hinder the acceptance of scientific health messages. The existing public health interventions have not been sufficiently tailored to address the diverse needs of the population in Bauchi State. As a result, misconceptions persist, and the overall impact of food safety campaigns remains suboptimal. The lack of a comprehensive assessment of public awareness on foodborne illnesses further limits the ability of policymakers to design targeted and effective educational programs (Adewale, 2023).

This study aims to fill this gap by systematically evaluating the level of public awareness about foodborne illnesses in Bauchi State. The research will identify the most effective communication channels and explore the socio-cultural factors that influence the community’s understanding of food safety. The outcome of this study is expected to guide the development of more effective, culturally relevant public health campaigns that can significantly reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current level of public awareness regarding foodborne illnesses in Bauchi State.
  2. To identify the primary sources of information and communication channels used by the public.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving public awareness and food safety education.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current level of public awareness of foodborne illnesses in Bauchi State?
  2. Which communication channels are most effective in disseminating food safety information?
  3. What strategies can enhance public understanding of foodborne illness prevention?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Public awareness of foodborne illnesses in Bauchi State is significantly lower among populations with limited access to modern media.
  2. Cultural beliefs and practices significantly influence the level of awareness regarding food safety.
  3. Tailored public health interventions will significantly improve food safety awareness in Bauchi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on diverse communities within Bauchi State, utilizing surveys and focus groups. Limitations include potential language barriers, variability in literacy levels, and limited generalizability beyond the sampled areas.

Definitions of Terms

  • Public Awareness: The level of knowledge and understanding about foodborne illnesses among the general population.
  • Foodborne Illnesses: Diseases caused by consuming contaminated food.
  • Communication Channels: Means through which information is disseminated, such as radio, television, and community meetings.
